In 2010 Buro Ruimte has successfully participated as a designer at HOSPER landscape architecture and urban design for a research project about cauliflower neighborhoods. This research project was initiated by HOSPER landscape architecture and urban design, M3H architects and GIDZ studio for sustainability.


The districts from the period '70-'85 in the Netherlands , contain more than a quarter of our housing stock. A large part of these areas consists of so-called residential neighborhoods or cauliflower. Several recent studies show that the quality of life in these neighborhoods deteriorate. Also, municipalities and corporations are concerned about its future. The present study is based on the belief that we should not wait until the neighborhoods where his 'slipped' that only a large-scale restructuring relief. By doing now small and precise interventions, we can try to reverse the negative trend.


The past few years has been diverse and thorough investigation of the problems that occur in many districts cauliflower. This research often focuses on problem analysis in sociological terms or allows architectural historical research to see specific quality in residential neighborhoods or focuses on New towns like Almere. Design research and solutions for larger and more typical cauliflower districts is still relatively little. The present study is.
